New Milestone in China-Turkey cooperation┃TYSIM Helps Build Turkey’s Ankara-Istanbul Ultra-High-Speed Railway

On December 26, 2024, according to the Turkish newspaper “AYDINLIK”, the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure is actively promoting the Ankara-Istanbul super-high-speed train project. The project is 344 kilometers long and will extend through Ankara-Beypazari-Narlihan-Akyazi to Adapazari and Kocaeli, and finally reach Söğütlüçeşme-Istanbul. The project includes 19 viaducts with a total length of 14 kilometers and 52 tunnels with a total length of 120 kilometers. The super-high-speed train will have a max speed of 350 kilometers per hour, and the travel time between Ankara and Istanbul is expected to be shortened to 1 hour and 20 minutes. The project is expected to be put into operation in the next few years.

Efficient construction helps advance the project

In order to ensure this major transportation infrastructure project can be completed on time and with high quality, the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure introduced professional engineering machinery equipment that made in China. Among them is the CAT chassis multifunctional rotary drilling rig customized and developed by TYSIM. This advanced equipment played a key role in the project and greatly improved the construction efficiency and quality. As China’s leading manufacturer of engineering machinery and piling equipment, TYSIM has been committed to providing efficient and reliable foundation construction solutions to global customers. This time, TYSIM’s Euro 5 emission multifunctional rotary drilling rig not only has high reliability, but also has a powerful power system and stable operating performance. It makes the piling process more efficient and ensures the smooth progress of the project.

Background and meaning

The origins of the Ankara-Istanbul high-speed railway project can be traced back to the Arifiye-Sincan Sürat railway line project in the 1940s, but actual project development did not begin until the early 1970s. The project was shelved in 1983 and then re-included in the investment plan in the name of the Ankara-Istanbul existing railway improvement project in 1994. On June 8, 2003, the construction of the Esenkent-Inonu section started. The entire project is divided into two phases: Ankara-Eskisehir and Eskisehir-Istanbul, with a total of 10 construction sections. On March 13, 2009, the first phase of the 245-kilometer Ankara-Eskişehir high-speed railway was officially put into operation, marking a milestone in Turkey’s high-speed railway construction.

TYSIM and Caterpillar have in-depth cooperation

In the large excavator market, especially in the 30–40-ton market, Caterpillar has a higher reputation and market recognition, which is inseparable from the brand’s years of technological accumulation. TYSIM has always regarded technological innovation as a powerful driving force for corporate development. In the process of product research and development, TYSIM not only concentrates on the iteration and update of technology and construction methods, but also thinks about how to “stand on the shoulders of giants and see farther”. As a result, TYSIM and Caterpillar have had many in-depth cooperations, among which Caterpillar’s multi-model small and medium-sized rotary drilling rigs and low-headroom rotary drilling rigs are classic products of the cooperation between the two parties.

The significance of the project to China-Turkey economic and trade cooperation

On February 6, 2020, Turkey suffered a “Disaster of the century” earthquake. Through the Baku-Tiflis-Kars railway, Turkey shipped 200 containers totaling 50,000 tents from China, providing important support for post-disaster relief. This event not only demonstrated the cooperation between China and Turkey in disaster relief, but also highlighted the important role of the project in promoting economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. In the future, Turkey and China plan to achieve the goal of operating 200 container freight trains per year in the medium term through the “Middle Corridor” and the Baku-Tiflis-Kars railway.

Conclusion

The successful application of the CAT chassis multifunctional rotary drilling rig customized by TYSIM in the Ankara-Istanbul super-high-speed train project not only demonstrates China’s strength in the field of high-end manufacturing, but also provides strong support for Turkey’s transportation infrastructure construction. The completion of this project will not only shorten the travel time between Ankara and Istanbul but will also further promote the cooperation between China and Turkey in the fields of economy, trade and ultra-high-speed railways. It will contribute to the successful implementation of the “Belt and Road” initiative.
